How to sit properly on the toilet?
Summary
The thought may make you smile and yet, there is absolutely nothing incongruous about it. Especially when you know that a bad position on the throne can lead to a certain number of inconveniences such as constipation , hemorrhoids or even anal fissures . So in short, here is how to sit properly on the toilet to poop more serenely on a daily basis!
The little worries of sitting
Since our earliest childhood, we are used to pooping in a sitting position. However, it is important to know that this is a position that goes against the natural evacuation of stools. To better understand, we must first visualize the path of the digestive tract . At its end, the rectum and the anal canal allow us to evacuate our excrement. However, they are controlled by a double sphincter which prevents incontinence , especially when standing.
However, when sitting, it forms a bend at the exit which considerably slows down the progression of stools. And to negotiate the bend well, there is only one solution: push hard ! The problem is that this seemingly harmless gesture can lead to a certain number of pathologies including: hemorrhoids , anal fissures , organ prolapse (especially in pregnant women or after childbirth) and diverticula .
In addition, this blockage causes stools to stagnate in the colon and causes constipation . This is why sitting properly on the toilet is essential to promote transit !
Different positions for sitting correctly on the toilet
There are several ways to sit properly on the toilet. And while some are more difficult to implement than others, fortunately there are some tips to help you!
The squatting position
To sit on the toilet, the squatting position with both feet on the toilet bowl is certainly the most recommended! Indeed, it allows the alignment of the rectum and the anus while reducing intestinal pressure .
Widely used in Turkey with the famous “Turkish toilets”, it was even the subject of a scientific study in 2003 by the Israeli doctor Dov Sikirov which showed a very clear improvement in the sensation of complete emptying at the rectum level.
The only problem is that in the West, it becomes a high-wire act with a particularly high risk of falling. Firstly because of the toilet bowl which risks running away, but above all because toilets are not designed to support the weight of a person.
Rodin's Thinker's Position
The other scientific study that shows how to sit properly on the toilet is an American study from 2010. Specifically, the researchers examined the " Thinker of Rodin " position with X-rays. It emerged that with the bust slightly forward and the elbows on the thighs, this can facilitate the progression and evacuation of stools.
However, even if the anorectal angle is more relaxed, this position does not relieve pressure and possible constipation problems.
The stool trick!
Finally, know that there is an unstoppable trick to sit properly on the toilet: the stool! The big advantage of this position is that it combines the two others mentioned above.
To do it right, you just need to place a step stool right in front of the toilet before sitting on the throne. Here, you don't necessarily need to invest in an ergonomic product since a simple shoe box should suffice. Then, you sit down and keep your feet on the step stool before leaning forward at an angle of about 35°.
Result? Perfect, pressure-free alignment for maximum comfort on the throne!
